I'd say upgrade other things before the cranks.I would say new rims or something.

It's too soon for the colour to come off. But I have noticed the loss in braking power. It's fine though. You just have to pull the lever a bit harder for the same braking power at high speeds. I really don't think that you should chose a chrome rim just because of the braking. But my rim is kind of black chrome so i don't know.
